Use Your (Own) Words
Use Your (Own) Words
This week’s MMMM is a little different, inspired by a recent event. It’s about Intuition. As opposed to ancient teachings, like the following:
“In the Beginning was the Word . . . and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh . . .” (John 1:1).
“The venerated Shakti, source of energy, opens her eyes and the universe is reabsorbed in pure consciousness; she closes them and the universe is manifested within her,” (Song of the Sacred Tremor).
“From everlasting I was established, from the beginning, before the earth began,” (Proverbs 8:23).
"You are the impersonal, universal, unchanging and perfect background mirror of empty awareness, in which the foreground of the universe appears," (Dzogchen).
For me, all of these quotes from sacred texts carry a common message: that there is a Divine Infinite Existence, an ongoing sound (Word or vibration), or inner vision, or a void filled with potential, or an overriding consciousness ripe with the unmanifested manifestation of an entire universe.
What these sacred texts also have in common is that they are written down so that we can read, study, contemplate, and pray with them. People around the world treasure and rely on them. They’ve become so sacred, in fact, that entire cultures have risen around them, and wars fought over them.
They have engendered both devotion and carnage, because everyone thinks they have the one and only “right” set of words in their sacred texts.
Here’s my question: While we’ve been busy killing each other over whose text was the best, Did God, the Creator, the Divine Beloved, the Supreme Infinity, the All-That-Is, the Source-of-All, the Grand Poo-Pah; Did that Infinite Being STOP TALKING when the ink was dry?
Our bodies are exquisite energy generators, transmitters, and receivers, with elegant nerve plexi, intricate channels and networks for the life force, complete systems for tuning in and vibrating with something greater than our individual selves. So much so, we crave that spiritual connection and seek it out. Yet, we settle for, even savor repeating those sacred texts with others who are like-minded. Smug and placid in our spiritual tribes because we think out tribe has the very best Last Words.
But are those written texts really the LAST and FINAL WORDS?
I just can’t believe that. Because we are gifted with yet another supreme function: INTUITION. What I called in my book, Living the Real Tree of Life, our Inner Lie Detector. Our very own “still, small voice.” Our Guru Within. Our personal spiritual guide. Our direct connection with the Infinite Divine through our own consciousness.
Oftentimes when we exercise this Intuitive gift, we are met with mockery, rebuke, gaslighting, or worse. Patted on the head and indulged like a small child with a doll.
Then we’re told to follow the words on a written page rather than our own inner guidance, even though there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of stories about people whose lives were saved because they followed their cutely named and patronized “spidey sense.”
Our link to this Divine Inner wisdom, our living, vibrational connection to the Infinite, is possibly the most miraculous gift of all, yet we indulge it at the expense of feeling foolish, superstitious, even apologetic.
Perhaps the very notion of each individual having this essence of wisdom within them is just too threatening to those who covet power for themselves and need us to become like sheep who follow their dictates and whims.
After all, how could a tyrant maintain power if all his soldiers simply shook their heads and left for home, melted down their weapons and built playgrounds?
Throughout time, the first thing tyrants do is burn scrolls or books, close libraries, forbid knowledge to be openly shared because it’s somehow demonic. Even burn people to death for it.
It’s time to claim our birthright: the inherent link with the Divine, the Supreme, the Most High, the Light Within, and be proud of it. We ALL have it. Yours isn’t any more “true” than mine, or hers, or his, or theirs.
There are as many spiritual paths as there are individuals. So long as we follow the authentic voices in our hearts (not the hating or scorning voices, and definitely not the “kill the other” voices), we can allow each person their own path and live in harmony.
When I say I meditate every morning, sometimes people ask, “what kind of meditation?” And I’m stumped. Because it isn’t any kind that I can name, or quote, or credit. I’m not relying on printed words on a page. I’m relying on the message of the moment as it arises from my deeper self, my Teacher Within.
It isn’t really a Word. It’s a vibrational frequency. Welcoming a new day that heralds untold experiences and adventures, large or small. Minuscule, even.
I wish I knew who said this, “Here I am! Wasn’t I?” We are alive right now. In this moment. And this one. Now this one. How can there possibly be a FINAL word? God or whatever you wish to call the All-That-Is, is speaking in every moment, in our hearts. All our words together make a symphony. Are we in tune? Am I? Are you?
The prayer we compose before even opening our eyes is every bit as Divine as the sacred texts. The words we put together with positive intent, loving vision, and kind thoughts, then say aloud with all the devotion of every heartbeat . . . THAT is a true prayer. Sacred words indeed!
It’s time to wake up. We ARE the Other. And they are us. The fights between us are contrived by those who would manipulate and divide us so we don’t see how they are robbing us of our free will and harmony.
We must pull back. Stop and think. Does what we see and hear ring true? Test it against your own intuition. Has this person lied? Do they show any humility? Ridicule others less fortunate? Act with love and generosity?
Listen to your own Words. The life force that flamed you into being and sustains you. The Intuition that will save your life if you’re paying attention.
We can stop fighting over what to call it. Put aside the dry pages with dry ink and listen to living words, the pulsating vibrancy within our own minds and hearts. What words arise? Maybe some thanks? Some regrets? Some forgiveness for self and others? Some healing vision for the world?
Right now, in this beginning are Our Words. What will they be?
